Solution to Overheating HV Cables

The Bahrain Electricity and Water Authority required a backfill material with resistivity not more than 1.2W/mK to ensure HV cables did not overheat. The EWA also required low strength so that the cables could be accessed if necessary with the minimum of effort or damage to them.

The contractor was facing difficulties with compacting traditional semi-dry sand-cement mixes which allowed excess voidage to act as an unwelcome insulator. The placement difficulties were also creating delays.

HHRM designed and developed a pumpable, flowing concrete (with no particle larger than 5mm to avoid potential impact damage to the expensive cables) meeting all the contractor's and client's needs.
